Chapter Four: Introduction to an indecisive citizen

Hi! I guess it’s time to introduce myself. I have to be honest, I never really enjoy when introduction time arrives. Mostly because I have a hard time trying to describe me as a person. Luckily, we were provided with a guideline! So I think I’ll start with my major. I am a psychology pre-med major. I have not yet applied to medical school, and frankly I don’t think I will for maybe a year or two because medical school takes a lot of time and I would really like to spend a couple years doing things like traveling. The coolest thing about my major is that it is so diverse! I could go into the medical field, I could go into law, or I could even teach! The possibilities are ENDLESS!

Last semester, as much of a whirlwind as it was, had tons of classes that I enjoyed taking. Biochemistry was not one of them. I did enjoy my Human rights class under the Women and Gender Studies division, but I also really loved my voice class. Growing up I was always singing. Unfortunately my family couldn’t afford voice classes to help me mold my voice, so I’m a little behind. When I got to college I was so excited to be able to take a class that would be included in my tuition. It was a great way to relieve stress. Going back to Biochemistry, like I said, it was awful, but I am so proud that I actually got a really good grade. The class I took had a professor that was notoriously difficult, so I was so proud of myself when I saw my final grade.

Over the summer, while taking a summer course, I somehow had time to watch a few shows. My favorite so far has been Lucifer, and luckily season 5 part one JUST released! I’m definitely going to enjoy taking some time to watch that.

As someone who loves music, it’s really hard to pick just one genre. A few genres that I find myself singing more are Show-tunes and Tejano (Tex-Mex). My favorite tejano artist is Selena. If you click on her name, it’ll take you to my favorite song of hers at the moment. Right now I am also really loving the Beetlejuice soundtrack. My favorite song of that soundtrack right now is called Dead Mom (I know, what a title).

When I was younger I really wanted to be a pop star or on broadway, and secretly a part of me now still wants to do that. I have to think realistically though, so I eventually want to be either an OB-GYN or an immigration lawyer. But that’s in the future. I think this next year I want to apply to the Disney College Program (if they still have it). I think it would be amazing to help other people have a magical time at the parks, the way cast members before have helped me to have a great time.

I’m half Mexican, so I grew up eating tons of dishes people have never heard of. One is molé. Molé is basically just chicken (in any form) covered in a spicy chocolate sauce. My family makes noodles on the side, but other people prefer rice. I’ll include a picture. It’s absolutely divine.

  1. Oh, it was dangerous to see this post before making dinner here, Kassy: now I wish I had something as exciting as mole! REAL mole: yummm! (We're just having salmon for dinner, which is nice..... but mole would be nicer!). And of course the foods of India are very famous, and so is the music, so as you explore the epics, keep an eye out for foods and for music too; you will see references to both of them... even some of the gods and goddesses are musicians! And in the Ramayana, you'll see an important role played by a magical heavenly rice pudding called kheer... which is not too hard to make at home if you want to give it a try: kheer recipes - link ... of course that won't be the pudding with supernatural powers like in the Ramayana, but it still tastes great... Oh, now I really am getting hungry... I should probably go make dinner instead of reading more Introductions and thinking about Indian food! :-)

  2. Hi Kassy!

I am so jealous of the fact that you can sing and, I'm sure, sound amazing! I love to sing and I sing all the time but I am truly terrible, anyone will tell you so I'm always so astounded by people who can really sing.

It's so great to find someone else who love show-tunes like I do. What is your favorite show-tune or musical?

I have also watched the first couple of seasons of Lucifer but I kind of fell out of watching it a while back. The fact that you are so excited about it though is making me want to start watching it again!

    Have a great day Kassy!

    1. Hi Riley! First I have to say, my best friend has the same name and she’s also into show-tunes and singing as well! I found that amazing! Currently I’m listening to the Amelie: A New Musical Original Broadway Soundtrack! I love how random it is! Thank you so much for your kind comment, it really made my day!

  3. Hey Kassy,

I just finished the new season of Lucifer on Netflix and it was really good if you haven’t started it yet. I took biochemistry this summer and it was easily one of the hardest classes I have taken since I have been at OU, so I agree it is pretty awful. I also ended up with a good grade so maybe the work is just hard overall but it was definitely relieving to finish strong in that class. I have never heard of the Disney College Program before, how long has that been a thing?

    1. Hi Wesley! On the Disney College Program, I’m not sure how long it has been a thing, I think its been around for a while. I have friends whose parents and older sibling have done it! It definitely is something to look into if your into the parks! Have a great day!

  4. Kassy!
Hi, how is it going? Like you, I also have a really hard time forming an introduction, I do not know really where to go with it, what do I say? I cannot sing at all, so I wish I had that talent. Lucifer was pretty good for the first few seasons but honestly I have not kept up with the new seasons at all. I think it is super awesome that you would want to be an immigration lawyer, it takes someone really strong to fulfill that role.

  5. Hi Kassy!

I'm on the pre-med track too and you are right medical school does take a lot of time so it is very important to take some time off and explore. Psychology is a really interesting major, and as you said it really is super versatile. I took biochem this summer and it is insane, there is just so much to know, but we are finally done with it, until it is time to take the MCAT.

Good luck with the rest of the semester, I'm excited to read more of your posts!

  6. Hi Kassy! I am also pre-med and have decided to take a gap year to relieve some of the stress that seems to be building as the application time gets closer. I used to want to somewhat rush through school so that I could start working as soon as possible but I have come to a similar conclusion as you -- I would like to enjoy life a little bit along the way! One of my good friends was accepted into the Disney College Program last year and she absolutely LOVED it! I hope you get the opportunity to be apart of it as well.

  7. Hey Kassy!! We definitely share a lot of commonalities, I am also a Psychology Pre-Med student, and I too disliked Biochemistry! It went pretty well for me and i am super glad it went well for you! And Mole sounds amazing, I have never thought of mixing any sort of chocolate with chicken, so that's definitely something unique and cool. Anyways, a pleasure to meet you!

  8. Hi Kassy, psychology sounds so interesting and fun to me. I watch a YouTube channel called "JCS - Criminal Psychology" and I find it fascinating and sad to hear about many of the stories the channel goes over. Also, did you know there is a movie made about Selena's life? I saw it a long time ago, but I remember my mom watched it a lot. Also, molé is so delicious!

  9. Hey, Kassy!

It's good to see somebody else with a dual interest in pre-med and music! I did both myself, majoring in music with a pre-med track, for about two and a half years before I converted to the dark side and dropped the pre-med track. I learned that I had a great respect for STEM and for medicine in general, but that it wasn't going to be my dog to chase. I'm glad that you've been able to utilize the resources of Catlett Music Center, here though! It's a great place, and the voice faculty here are swell! I'd be curious to know who you're taking lessons with. I know Dr. Burcham the best, and he and I go back a ways, but I've heard great things about the other faculty here!

    Cheers,

    Chris

  10. Hey Kassy,

I am the same way with introductions as you are, it is the worst when you have to give an introduction in class. However, I like the introductions in this class because people have the time to actually come up with something, and they can tell you whatever they want about themselves. I totally love that you have never given up on singing, and you should definitely keep chasing your dreams that involve this. Ok so I have never tried molé but I love chicken and I love chocolate so I need to try this soon. Good luck this semester and in the future!

  11. Hello Kassy, it is nice to meet you. I totally understand where you are coming from in terms of med-school. I am a Pre-Med Biology major and I have definetely ran into thoughts about switching majors due to time. But just remember that nothing worth having, comes easy or quick. If you push through this short period of time of grinding, your future self will thank you greatly. Good luck in your journey.

  12. Hi Kassy,
It is so good to meet you! What a tough major but it is true that the possibilities of doing whatever you want is endless! That is so awesome about the major you chose because you have so many options. I like how you said you would take some time off and go travel, that would be so fun. Where would you wanna travel to?
Wish you the best in the rest of this semester.

  13. Hi Kassy,
First, I'd just like to compliment the theme and layout of your site, I think it looks really cool and unique! I actually wanted to respond to your comment on my intro, but thought you might not see the reply, so I decided to post the reply here instead haha (hope that's okay with you). I do watch HGTV, but it's not one of my favorite shows. I like watching shows like criminal minds, where murder mysteries unfold :). I think that it's really cool that there's a strong influence of your culture over you and respect that a lot! Good luck in the future with med school!

  14. Hi Kassy,

Your blogger layout is really great. I feel like you spent a lot of time deciding how to make your website look aesthetic and you nailed it! I agree with your thoughts on introduction posts. I too have a hard time when it comes to describing myself to other people. I didn't really think about how diverse the medical field was and how you could go into things such medical law as well. I hope that you are able to get into the medical program that you want. Good luck!

  15. Hi Kassy,
I took biochemistry last semester too! And I totally agree that it was a really difficult class; I'm glad that you got a really good grade! I also like binging on my favorite shows. Recently I have been watching The Office. I have never heard of molé before, but that sounds so delicious! Chicken covered in a spicy chocolate sauce sounds like a really unique combination... I'll have to try it someday! Best of luck with your endeavors and I look forward to reading your work!

  16. Hi Kassy. I like showtunes too! I am a terrible singer, so I can only barely relate to your broadway dream, because yes it would be amazing but with my voice, not a reality even if I were to become rich and famous. I recently watched Hamilton for the first time. I know, I am way behind on the times. I had been meaning to watch it for quite some time but just finally got around to it. I also like Wicked, of course, and Phantom of the Opera. I got to see Phantom in OKC a couple of years ago and it was just the best experience. I am going to go see it again sometime. I enjoy pretty much all musicals, so I will have to watch Beetlejuice soon!

  17. Hey Kassy! I cant believe I just came across your intro and blog. Even if you hate intros I thought you did great in yours! By the way great job in Biochem i took in the summer to purposely avoid said teacher that you were talking about haha I am. pre - PA major so we may have had some science courses together at some point. I also think its so cool you are really in touch with your Mexican side. I am so proud of my culture ( I am El Salvadoran) I think Latino culture is so amazing the music, food, and people! Nuestra cultura es hermosa <3 I also wanted to be s singer growing up and one of my favorite artist is Selena as well. I remember always trying to mimic her dance moves! Have you heard Netflix is coming out with a show based on her life? I really hope they do her name justice. My favorite songs are amor prohibido, El Chico del Apartamento 512, si una vez, bidi bidi bom bom, baila esta cumbia and well a ton more. It is just so hard to choose! I hope you are safe and well. Best of luck this semester and all your endeavors.

  18. Hi Kassy! I absolutely agree that it can be difficult to introduce yourself sometimes. Maybe some part of me think that I'm really not that interesting of a person haha. I'm envious that you have a very clear interest in a certain genre of music. I've gone through phases of different music, but now I just kind of listen to whatever. I guess country is about the only music I've come to dislike. The picture of mole looks really delicious and I would love to try it one day! Good luck on your Finals!
