Chapter Thirty Two: Week Seven Story

Once there was a poor young woman. She had just given birth to twin boys, but unfortunately she was left to raise them alone. She suddenly remembered that years ago, the King’s wife had tragically passed away. She wondered if he was looking for a new queen. One day as she was in the woods searching for food she stumbled upon the royal carriage broken down to pieces. As she moved closer to investigate, she saw the king seriously hurt. She took him back to her humble home and treated his injuries there. Days later when the king came to, he realized what had happened and thanked her tremendously for what she had done for him. He told her that he would grant her two favors, and from that point she knew that this was the opportunity she was looking for. She asked for the king to take her children in as his as her first favor and her second favor was to take her as well. He was a bit confused by her request. She didn’t ask for money, she didn’t ask for jewels or status, she only asked to be taken in along with her sons. The King realized that this poor woman probably didn’t live under the best of conditions, so he happily agreed and hall the woman, along with her children, move into the palace. Day after day the King and the woman got to know each other better. They talked about basically everything, so much that there was almost nothing they didn’t know about each other. Then one day the King asked for the woman’s hand in marriage. She knew this day would come, it was all part of her plan, but she realized after getting to know the King that she actually loved him. So she said yes, and they lived happily ever after.

Author’s Note: I took inspiration for this story from the story of Kaikeyi from The Ramayana. The story is titled Bharata Returns and was written by Donald A. Mackenzie. I didn’t want the woman to be too ill intended, if any at all. I wanted to show that this was a lady who wanted the best for her kids, but ended up with the best for them all.

  1. Hey, Kassandra!

I enjoyed reading your story! I thought that it was an interesting re-interpretation of the Bharata Returns story. The premise of the story is really solid, and there's a lot of room to express your artistic voice. I wonder what the relationship between the two would look like via dialogue? We start to see the thoughts and emotions of the characters pan out through the 3rd person POV, but I think that it would be really neat to see their feelings expressed in conversation.

    Cheers,
    Chris

  2. Hi Kassandra! I enjoyed reading the story and the romantic twist that it had. It is awesome how you were able to draw inspiration from the original story but change the elements of it. It is really pure and organic. I think it could be cool if you were able to incorporate some dialogue in the story whether it be between the woman and her children or the woman and the King. Overall, really good story!
